OCA Connects Presents The Innovation Program

Keeping camp both educational and fun is important to all camp directors, and this program is designed to do just that. By sharing ideas, camp directors can learn from their peers, and all camps can benefit.

In this first year, the introduction of this new program is time sensitive, but we hope there will be enough interest to make this a regular part of OCA’s programs in the future.

Purpose of The Program

The Innovation Program was designed to recognize and reward OCA camps who develop creative programs and infrastructure that enhance the camper experience. It is open to any OCA camp and outdoor centre Member!

There are two categories:

  1. Program
  2. Infrastructure

An award of $1,000 will be given to each of the two winning camps. As part of the submission for this program, camps will be expected to make a presentation of their plans on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at the 2019 OCA Annual Conference!

A separate award of $250 each will be given to the two camps (one for each category) who present the most entertaining and innovative presentations at the Conference. The winners of the Innovative Presentations will not necessarily be the same as the winners of the two categories.

  • Must be totally new to the camp, not simply an addition to an existing program.
  • Must be fully planned by the time of the 2019 OCA Annual Conference and implemented for the summer of 2019.
  • An expectation would be that a brief report would be submitted by the winners at the following conference.
  • May include projects such as an unusual activity, a special theme, a staff training program, or other form of innovative program.
  • Cannot be presented in both categories.
  • Must be infrastructure that was not operational in the summer of 2018.
  • Must be fully planned by the time of 2019 OCA Annual Conference and purchased or built in time for the summer of 2019, although there may be a second component planned for the following year.
  • An expectation would be that a brief report would be submitted by the winners at the following Annual Conference.
  • May include construction of buildings, redevelopment of environmental areas of concern, equipment purchases to introduce new programs or reintroduce programs that no longer take place at the camp.
  • Cannot be presented in both categories.
  • Must be 10 to 15 minutes in length.
  • May include audio-visual materials, live performances, original songs, skits or dances.
  • Must be entertaining as well as informative.

A panel of 3 to 5 experienced former camp professionals, ie no longer associated with a specific camp, will review all written applications and the outline of presentation planned, and will choose up to 4 finalists per category. Final decision will be made at 2019 OCA Annual Conference.
