Parents Demand a ‘Return on Investment’ from Camp!

Joanna Warren Smith

Butternut/Holly

In focus groups, parents of all socio-economic levels agree that camp is more than fun and games. Especially in today’s world, it’s an investment and they want valuable, noticeable and measurable outcomes. Parents are also clear about what motivates them to ‘buy’, how they select one camp over another and the 6 areas in which a camp must deliver if their child is to return. These parental attitudes will guide your marketing for new acquisitions, help refine retention techniques and will help you create a critical, parent-friendly ‘communication plan’.

keynote 2
“That’s So Gay”: Creating Safer Space at Camp

Kate Moore and Karen B.K. Chan

Conference Centre 1

Ready? Set? What will you do? You’re talking to the parents of a prospective new camper. They want to know what your camp does to make sure that their daughter who has two daddies will feel welcome and safe. A camper you knew as Jakob last year is now going by J and uses the pronoun “they”. Their family requests that they be put in a girl’s cabin. You overhear a camper calling your co-counselor a “fag” because he wears make-up and has long hair. Come explore how you can build on your camp culture to be safer for everyone including campers, staff and families who identify as LGBTQI2S+.

keynote 3
The Ultimate Camp Sing Song ………..
Mike Pearse

Conference Centre 2 .

“Let there always be a song, a song down in your heart… when you sing you say, life is good today, so keep singing ‘til we meet, again.” – Mark Baldwin Singing, whether done while at a meal, paddling a canoe with friends, walking to and from anywhere at Camp, or round the glow of an evening Campfire, is a cornerstone of children’s camping the world over.  Come to this keynote to learn and sing some great Camp songs, to learn some tried and true tips for leading great Camp songs, and to share in some other programming nuggets, to boot!  It’s an hour set aside to enjoy, together, what we hope will be “The Ultimate Camp Singsong”!
